About the canoe tour

This is my first time canoeing. Can I still participate?

Yes, there is absolutely no problem. The canoeing experience in the Nakasatsunai area is on still water (water with no current), so even first-timers can receive a lesson on how to maneuver and practice on the water, so anyone can participate with confidence. The canoes used on the river cruise tour are "twin canoes" made up of two canoes joined together, so they are extremely stable and unlikely to capsize. In addition, a guide will be on board to steer the canoe, so everyone from small children to the elderly can participate with peace of mind.

Will the canoe tip over and fall into the water?

During the canoeing experience, unless you are playing around and hitting each other, splashing water on each other, or doing other reckless things, there is a 90% chance that you will not capsize during the normal experience. Also, while it is designed to make it less likely that you will fall into the water on the river cruise tour, it is not possible to guarantee this 100%. However, if you are on board normally, it is highly unlikely that you will fall into the water. If you wish, on hot days you may be asked to cool down by swimming in the river or jumping in and floating down the river.

I can't swim, is that okay?

You will be required to wear a life jacket when near the water, so everyone will be able to float. There is no need to worry as you will not be swimming. There is no need to worry about falling into the water on a river cruise.

What kind of attire should I wear to participate?

April to June ⇒ Please wear clothes that are easy to move in and that you don't mind getting a little dirty or wet. It can be chilly when there is a wind, so it will be more comfortable to have an extra layer on top.
July to September ⇒ In Tokachi, temperatures can exceed 30°C on some days, so a cool T-shirt or shorts are comfortable to wear to prevent heatstroke, but at other times it is reassuring to have an extra layer on top. A rash guard will be comfortable in midsummer.
October onwards ⇒ The wind is cool, so a fleece with an outer layer on top is best. Your feet will stay dry in all seasons so you can participate in wearing regular shoes, but rental sandals are also available, so please let us know if you would like.

Is there a place to change clothes?

Generally, there is no place to change clothes, but in an emergency, you can change in the restroom area at the roadside station where you meet. On river cruises, you are unlikely to get wet enough to need to change, and it is highly unlikely that you will fall into the water. However, after the SUP tour in the Nakasatsunai area, Satsunai Park (campsite) is nearby, so you can change clothes and take a shower (for a fee) there.

What is the maximum number of people that can participate?

A twin canoe can accommodate up to six adults. If there are more than six people, two canoes will be used.

What is a twin canoe?

This canoe is made up of two connected Canadian canoes (open deck canoes).Compared to rubber boats and rafting boats, it is extremely stable and there is almost no risk of falling into the water or capsizing, so it can be enjoyed safely by anyone, from small children to the elderly.

I would like to go down the river in a single canoe. Is that possible?

Yes, if you wish, you can. However, this is only available to those who can operate a Canadian canoe. Beginners and those who are doing it for the first time can take part in a separate program (canoe operation lesson + still water practice followed by river rafting), so please contact us for more information.
